Kaka Ruto | Software Engineer

Hello! I'm Ruto Collins. They call me Kaka, a Swahili word I love.

I design, develop and deploy backend services (APIs) with focus on high availability, low latency and scalability.

I also occassionally write client-facing code that consume web services.

Here's a few technologies I've been working with recently:

Write SOLID, well tested code for a diverse feature-set of Gobble's codebase
Refactor old parts of the codebase into simpler, more-readable and less-coupled pieces
Implement caching to reduce page load
Interface with the Customer Support team to fix urgent, user-reported bugs
Work with an engineering team from Canada and other stakeholders from the US

Engineered and maintained a number of Boatflex' customer-facing features using Ruby on Rails and a little React
Assisted in the development of Boatflex' admin dashboard which greatly helped the management to make the right decisions using available data
Develop Boatflex' APIs using the Pragma/Trailblazer way of writing RESTful APIs
Work with management stakeholders from Denmark and engineers from Italy, Philippines and Kenya, to build a product that makes boating in Europe easy, cheap and convenient

VOF is Andela's internal hiring tool with features to monitor applicants' Values alignment(V), Outputs quality(O) and Feedback outputs(F) over an extended period of time
Develop and maintain the full-stack Rails app primarily using HTML, CSS, Sass, Coffeescript and Ruby (using the Ruby on Rails framework)
Manually test sites in various browsers and mobile devices to ensure cross-browser compatibility and responsiveness
Interface with UX designers, our PM and other stakeholders to ensure thoughtful and coherent user experiences for our users

Through Andela, I have worked on three products, VOF, Boatflex and Gobble. Boatflex is a boat rental platform based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Gobble is a meal-kit delivery company based in Palo Alto, US
